Christmas themed Biscuits!
This is a simple, quick and cheap activity with a delicious outcome. A perfect treat to take into work and keep your boss sweet or an activity for the children to enjoy on them cold, snowy days!
What you will need:
Everything can be bought from your local supermarket; ingredients and equipment to create these tasty treats. You can buy Christmas shaped cutters in most supermarket shops, we bought ours from Home Bargains for a fantastic £1.99, check them out here. In this pack, you get 6 shapes which are: Christmas tree, Angel, Bell, Snowman, Gingerbread Man and Shooting Star. These cutters can be washed and reused as much as you like.
- 100g Unsalted Butter
- 100g Caster Sugar
- 275g Self-raising Flour (little bit extra to dust the side and rolling pin)
- Vanilla Extract
- 1 free-ranged Egg
- Christmas Shaped Biscuit Cutters
- Rolling Pin
- Baking Tray
- Grease proof paper
- Food colouring
- Icing sugar
Step-by-Step Guide to Bake the Biscuits:
- Pre-heat the oven to 190oC and line a baking tray (or two) with grease proof paper.
- Mix the caster sugar and butter together until a pale colour.
- Wisk the egg in a separate bowl and add bit by bit with the Vanilla extract until fully mixed.
- Once fully mixed add the flour bit by bit until a dough mixture.
- Sprinkle the flour on your worktop and place the dough mixture on.
- Using the rolling pin spread evenly until about 1cm thick.
- Using your shape cutters place into the dough and then onto the baking tray.
- Carry on until you have used all your dough mix (you will have to refold and roll out a few times).
- Place your tray in the oven for 8-12 minutes (until they turn a golden colour).
- When a golden colour, remove from oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Then you are ready to decorate your biscuits!
Step-by-Step Guide to Decorate the Biscuits:
For this step, you can either use ready-made icing pens from the store or follow the guide below to create your own coloured icing.
To create your own coloured icing, it is simple you just need to add 1 and a ½g of icing sugar to 1 tablespoon of water and add 2-3 drops of food colouring. You can add more food colouring to have a stronger colour depending on how much icing you have made. If you need more icing use the ratio of water to icing sugar until you have enough.
Now you are ready to decorate your biscuits how you like!
You could even buy edible glitter to sparkle things up.
Our First Attempt:
They don’t need to be perfect this is just a bit of fun and remember as long as they taste nice that’s all that matters!
Some of ours went a little too golden in the oven and we left ours for 11 minutes, but that just added an extra crunch! We aren’t professional biscuit decorators so we had a little bit of fun messing around creating these amateur designs! In total, it took us just short of two hours to bake and decorate but depending on how many you make this could pass a few hours.
